Della Robbia terracottas in Arezzo

In 2009 Arezzo welcomes the art of the Della Robbias with an amazing exhibition: a dialogue within the arts of Renaissance in which clay becomes light thanks to the unique process of glazing terracotta. The exhibition is in the Medieval and Modern Art Museum of Arezzo and is just a taste of what you can admire in our land.
After the exhibition you can discover countless works by the Della Robbia disseminated throughout our province. We propose itineraries corresponding to Arezzo’s four valleys:

Casentino itinerary. A valley full of history and mysticism that gives you the chance to see many Della Robbia terracottas, most of them kept in churches and monasteries. You will visit medieval villages, such as Bibbiena, Poppi, Memmenano and Stia and see some of the best masterpieces at the sanctuary of La Verna.

Valtiberina itinerary. You can admire important works either by the Della Robbia family or the Buglionis, the biggest competition. You will visit Sansepolcro (well-known for Piero della Francesca’s works), Pieve S.Stefano and the lovely village of Anghiari.

Valdichiana itinerary. This is the biggest valley of the province and you will have an amazing panoramic view from the ancient fortress of Civitella, our first stop. Then you will walk through the tiny medieval streets of different villages, such as Monte San Savino, Castiglion Fiorentino and Foiano della Chiana which is one of the Della Robbia’s most important centres in our province.

Valdarno itinerary. You can admire the Della Robbia coat of arms in S.Giovanni Valdarno. After a stop in the small village of Cavriglia, we will move to Montevarchi where there is the famous “Tempietto della reliquia del sacro latte”. Finally we will stop in Bucine to visit the Pieve of Galatrona that keeps four great works by Giovanni Della Robbia.
