Jewels of Valdichiana valley

Valdichiana (view)

This itinerary is an invitation to discover Valdichiana, the widest valley of Appennino mountains. This area conserves a vast number of historical and artistic treasures and offers celebrated products such as Chianina beef (named after the valley) and Vin Santo, Tuscany’s famous desert wine wine.
Our tour will open with a spectacular view of the valley from the suggestive Rocca di Civitella which had an important role in the past for its strategic position. We will move to Monte San Savino, a lovely hamlet where Middle Ages resound through the narrow alleys, to reach the old Cassero that hosts an interesting Ceramic Museum.
Along the road to Siena we will reach the Gargonza Castle. Although it was restored, it conserves the ancient typically Tuscan structure. Dante was one of the hosts of this castle during the war between Guelfi (Pope supporters) and Ghibellini (Emperor supporters).
Finally we will reach Lucignano to admire its beautiful historical centre. It has a particular elliptic structure and it was the last fortress before siennese territories. For that reason it was – and still is- surrounded by strong, big walls.
